Gaia sings and plays guitar. Laia sings and plays drums and Miriam sings and plays bass. And the three together they try to make songs for anyone else to sing. Pop with distortion, lots of "oooos" and vocal harmonies in in a cave with endless ceilings sung in their native Catalan not Spanish, mind you! Aias began as a birthday party band and by surprise ended up being a band for real, or at least thats their current intention. Their songs, sung in their native tongue of Catalan, draw listeners in with a sound of dreamy longing.
Think Lush meets Dolly Mixture with a hint a Motown.
Packed with liner notes from contemporaries like Go Betweens Robert Forster, The Chills Steven Schayer and recollections from Peter Milton Walsh himself, this set is an essential document for anyone interested in the the post-punk movement. By Night establishes The Bats driven jangle sound that would find a mainstream audience some 10 years later and continue to influence bands today.
Re-issued for Record Store day as an exact facsimile of the original. Yeah, another "beach" band, but the word "fossils" rightly hints at nostalgia that goes deeper and more distant than a few summers past. Gone is the "lo-fi" and the comparisons that go with it. More expansive sounds, John Pena and Katie Garcia on guest vocals, keyboard, electronic drums Consider it a taster of things to come.
His recent move from North Carolina that year had left him with a sense of longing to reconnect with his past and the lush open landscape he left behind. During that year Dustin experimented with innovative methods of self-recording using a Tascam four-track and Logic Pro and composing. He drew his inspiration from improvisational jazz, classical and shoegaze artists, such as Anthony Braxton, pre-Stereolab project McCarthy and Giuseppe Tartini. Playing all his own instruments keyboard, drums, bass, guitar , he soon emerged with a shimmering array of sun drenched pop songs.
Dustin eventually linked creative forces with John Pena bass , Sennott Burke guitar and Cole Smith drums who joined the band and helped collaborate on the songs Wide Awake and Gathering. The full bands immediate chemistry and unforgettable stage presence radiate with a wild, youthful-sincerity. Beach Fossils offers warm and inviting melodies that evoke the haunted sounds of another era: straightforward guitar riffs, a kaleidoscope of psychedelic rhythms, and distant, faded vocals all come together to make the perfect soundtrack to an endless summer afternoon.

Sprung from seemingly nowhere to playing constantly in Brooklyn. I saw these guys almost start a riot at a Fashion Week event and then proceed to party down with Mickey Rourke. Absolutely amazing. Beautiful full-color sleeve by Matt Volz. The songs you love, available for listening to in cars, shower radios, etc.
These guys are currently blazing their way across the States on the "Nightmare of Sound" tour with the Vivian Girls. Coming live soon to a theatre near you. The truth is much simpler than that: Blank Dogs murkier mixes were purely a matter of having limited means.
Between that cult following and the continued success of Captured Tracks, Sniper was finally able to buy better equipment and develop his sound into an expansive mix of clear The Cure, Joy Division and cryptic The Go-Betweens, Neil Young influences—a decidedly Blank Dogs direction that touches upon everything from the spare, sparkling synths of Frances cold-wave movement to the jangly guitars of classic indie rock.
All of this progress was made with one particular record in mind: this falls Land and Fixed LP, a tight song effort that took about a year and 13 scrapped tracks some of which ended up on the Phrases EP to complete. The result isnt just a clearer recording; its like going from stolen cable on a inch set to a wall-swallowing HDTV. Occasionally calling in collaborators from the likes of Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls and Times New Viking, Phrases, Snipers latest EP in a long succession of vinyl-only releases, sees him going it alone for the most part.
Indeed, its hard to envisage anyone else being allowed sufficient mindspace to create alongside Sniper, such is the vast propensity of ideas that fill the four tracks here. While the opening electro-tinged robotics of Heat And Depression resembles a Crystal Castles outtake, Sniper mumbling "Can you see yourself? Blurred Tonight takes The Cramps danse macabre schtick through the same backdoor as The Horrors managed so successfully last year, except with even more menacing vocal assertions courtesy of that man Sniper. His voice then gets the heavily reverbed treatment on Racing Backwards, a Cure-inspired number that sees the opulent Sniper make the offer "stay to the end" which becomes increasingly difficult to refuse as verse usurps chorus.
Despite Blank Dogs NYC dancefloor tendencies, theres something inadvertently English about these compositions, suitably realised in the closing End Of Summer which takes Depeche Modes early Roland Jupiter-led blueprint before mashing it into a collage of post-punk ambience, beats and all Silkscreened sleeves. New release on Mike Blank Dogs label.
They were cool, handsome and gorgeous.
The songs are simple but at the same time complex. The two girls, two boys line-up added a tension that was both sexual and musically fragile. You felt it might all fall apart any second but it rarely did. After their cassette in a tube ploy worked for John Peel play, the band released a cassette on InPhaze and disbanded not long after.
Collected here is a rediscovered gem showcasing the zest and spontaneity that gripped the UK DiY scene of the time, standing up to their contemporaries like Television Personalities, The Homosexuals and Marine Girls. This release marks the first vinyl and cd release for BonaDish, their complete recorded output compiled and newly mastered. Captured Tracks have compiled their entire recorded output on The Zaragoza Tapes.
Bona Dishs avowedly DIY aesthetic was coupled with a genuine pop flair, and songs like 8am stand comparison with the very best independent music of the era. San Franciscos indie-pop titans begin their world takeover here. One exclusive new track. This will be around forever but get it before anyone else does.
Black and white reverse board sleeve. Their 2nd 7". You have the first on Make a Mess, right? The best.
Bigard, le fameux humoriste vous avez dit humoriste? Perry Indeed, that undermining already has begun. Quinn, the City Council speaker. But now our love — expressed in the fullness of a Gospel that identifies homosexual conduct as sin but then provides eternal hope through justification and sanctification — is hate.
If you learned they went to the lengths of recording an album while in high school without a label or distribution and actually pressed a couple hundred copies, even weirder. Except it doesnt. The story goes from being about another rare, privately pressed recording thats been re-discovered, into something thats pretty incredible. But its always those kind of weirdos who go on to do great things. Part Flying Nun, part Bubblegum. One of our favorite bands. Newell collected these songs from the forgotten nooks and crannies of his colorful musical background. This record is the first release from the band containing new songs from the time, since they disbanded in Liner notes unveil a personal glimpse into each song, written by Newell himself.
Newell, a rock ringer and part-time kitchen porter whod left his band the previous summer, and Elliot, a drummer and former hippy traveler, had much in common. They shared a love of sunny s pop music, punk rock and musical comedy. Neither Elliot nor Newell cared much for any kind of musical rule book, bother were dismayed by the new right-wing politics which had taken over their country. Both were in their twenties, had time on their hands and were keen to create something new. Blow Away Your Troubles was originally released in and only offered on cassette until now.
The influential album has been completely remastered and on vinyl for the first time. This release offers a new way to listen to this important band like never before.
It would be nice and tidy to be able to say that the Cleaners from Venus story ended right here with this rather more than definitive collection of broken or misshapen tracks. Now past 30, and sick of being at odds with the London music industry, he decided to give up — not music exactly — but any attempt to make a living from it. Though Newell and his new musical partner Giles Smith continued to casually record and Under Wartime Conditions continued to pick up good reviews, including one in the UKs Sound magazine, there was no intent to continue.
During this sporadic period of recording that the Cleaners came to, quite nonchalantly, is the release of the cassette Living With Victoria Grey. The two began working on "Going to England. Although 7 of the songs from Living With Victoria Grey would appear on the album, the cassette was all but forgotten, the only master copy having been lost. It wasnt until almost 10 years later that Newell was approached by a man hed never met before who said, "You sent me this many years ago and told me to look after it.
I did. I thought youd like it back now. Over 20 years after its initial quiet release, Captured Tracks is pleased to present Living With Victoria Grey on vinyl for the first time as part of the final installment of the Cleaners from Venus collection. Lol Elliot, the other Cleaner, came back from time to time to time to help, but in effect, Midnight Cleaners-although not entirely a Newell solo project- was recognizably the last of the original Cleaners From Venus albums. It was also the end of the first chapter of their story. This release brings about a new way to the iconic band.
While some songs made it onto Newells The Greatest Living Englishman, many fell into obscurity, never to be released. Newell claims to have had no knowledge of the release, but the punning title of the album has his paw prints all over it. Newell spent the years between and focusing on his writing, poetry, and gardening, and when the release surfaced in , he had little recollection of even sending the songs to his friends at JAR.
When Newell heard it, he was surprised to find that musical additions had been made to the tracks, which polished up his spontaneously and sometimes sloppy recording style. Newell felt touched that anyone would be interested, or even care about something which hed regarded as a rag-bag of demoes.
Conversely, as a natural musical anarchist, the idea that anyone, anywhere, considered that they knew better than he did annoyed him. This version of My Back Wages as issued by Captured Tracks is Martin Newells own "producers cut" of oddities, out-takes and "orphan songs. It was never used. Over 20 years later, Captured Tracks is thrilled to give Newell the chance to release this material on his own terms and put the Cleaners to rest once and for all. After busking and loosely recording some demos, Cleaners from Venus signed to the independent label Deltic Records.
Previously, Newell and Nelson gained quite a bit of media attention for their guitar driven rock by refusing to tour by anything but bicycle as the Brotherhood of Lizards. This generated a lot of attention for the band, but unfortunately Nelson left for other adventures before it could fully come to fruition. What we find in Number Thirteen is a transitional period for Newell. Intended as a demo, the cassette received positive feedback, but ultimately led nowhere. At years-old, Martin Newell reflected upon the almost two decades of hard work and musical activity which had led him to this point.
One morning he got up and began to coolly put his instruments away. He turned his small upstairs music studio into a room for books and writing. He decided to turn to the life of gardening that hed always thought upon. However, the simple life of a gardener would not last long. Newell soon found renowned with his poetry and writing, penning a semi-regular column for Londons Independent, appearing on many TV and radio programs and publishing several collections.
Finally, in Autumn of , through another series of connections and coincidences, he was asked if he would like to make a solo album, with none other than XTCs Andy Partridge in the producers chair. The first thing that he did, before dusting off his long abandoned instruments, was send Andy Partridge a handful of songs from the Cleaners from Venus Number Thirteen cassette.
Number Thirteen is one of the many stepping stone releases that have led Martin Newell and the Cleaners From Venus through their storied career. Available for the first time on vinyl, and seeing its first wide release, Captured Tracks is pleased to give you Number Thirteen. The new issue was then packaged up and sent off the Sounds and NME, both of gave On Any Normal Monday honorable mentions in their cassette review columns. The biggest surprise however came from the more conservative Melody Maker, whose own Patrick Humpries gave the Cleaners project a glowing review in that paper.
So far as Newell was concerned, this was a football kicked through the greenhouse window of the conventional music business. Lol Elliott and Martin Newell, who together formed the legendary lo-fi band Cleaners from Venus met in the small town of Wivenhoe, southeast England at the turn of s. Newell, a rock singer and part-time kitchen porter whod left his band the previous summer, and Elliott, a drummer and former hippy traveller, had much in common. Neither Elliott nor Newell cared much for any kind of musical rule book, both were dismayed by the new right -wing politics which had now taken over their country.
Both , were in their twenties, had time on their hands and were keen to create something new. He never cared much for any kind of musical rule book and broke new ground with music that garnered a cult following and a highly-influential sound that continues to inspire. These four albums mark the final chapter in the unveiling of the entire discography from the band, spanning the end of Martin Newells long, storied run as the Cleaners from Venus Included are Living with Victoria Grey, Number Thirteen and My Back Wages, which Newell considers a new release as it is finally being released as he originally intended it.
The fourth album is collection of rarities and unreleased material from the time that My Back Wages was recorded, called Extra Wages. This beautiful 4xLP box set includes original liners written by Newell himself with unreleased photos and a 16 page book of Newells poetry.
Each LP includes a download card. More surprising is that they maintain a high standard of quality. For a follow up, "Laugh Tracks" finds Tim in a more fleshed out full-bodied approach, complete with horn arrangements. These are personal songs from a highly gifted songwriter and were happy to make them available. In the 12 songs collected here, Tim traverses a wide range of conflicting moods while somehow always reenforcing his songs with messages of hope and positivity.
Joined by fellow Soul searchers James Kim Kelley Stoltz band , Noelle Cahill, and Alicia Vanden Huevel Aislers Set , along with other supportive friends, Cohen has taken long musical strides on this third LP, in terms of arrangement, recording, and overall risk-taking. Accompanied by a double 7" which includes songs from the same fruitful period, "Magic Trick" is a record for all seasons, and should be listened to in the earliest morning. As you can see by the catalog number, weve been eagerly awaiting this one for a while.
Im afraid this is all we get until their LP is ready to go, so take it in. Their music is made for dancing, and with feeling and attention to the details. Their trip is sleek and synthetic meets human emotion. Cosmic glamour meets do-it-yourself. Voice and a rhythm. Frosty tropics and hazy nites. Love on the beat. In they put together the Tuff Trax 8-track studio in their home where they work on sound and visuals every day. Cosmetics is their lifestyle. Anyway, this new London band reminds me fondly of many things from the era, as well as having something of a more psychedelic Skygreen Leopards air to it.
Definitely one to keep an eye out for. After being out of print for way too long, were putting it back out there. Now in standard jackets. It seems that only now has the time ripened, dear listener; let the sweet smell of singed terrestrial morbidity flow from the valley of the bored teenager to your ears.
Remastered and on vinyl for the first time. Working with electronic instrumentation but not limited to electronic influences alone, Reductions are carving out their own niche of sad, beautiful pop music. Voices with the echoes of youth sung wistfully into in the well and steeped in the myst of minor discord float inside Familiar Flights. Two equally amazing tracks, and in our opinion, two of their best.
Strictly limited to copies, this is one of the few Captured Tracks releases that will not stay in print. None of these recordings will appear on their forthcoming LP and only about half the songs will not be re-recorded for the LP. Almost the polar opposite of this springs cassette release - these songs are confident, insane and beautifully recorded by Gary Olson. All the subtlety of Sonny Bono trying to barge his way into a restaurant while wearing a fur vest.
The influence of The Moves bass sound and arrangements, 60s folk-rock vocal harmonies and the Neo Boys are present in the works, plus a whole magic power they have all their own. Thats right: magic power. I found Oliver through his Zac Efron-channeling solo project Male Models, but soon learnt it was just "a one afternoon project" - and that his other moniker Hanoi Janes will be used for all future musical forays, along with a couple of pals banging some drums from time to time.
The soundtrack for the only party episode ever filmed for the Twilight Zone? Having taken on the nickname given to Jane Fonda in the 70s because of her anti-war stance on Vietnam, these girls would be all bent up about, well you know, stuff. Youd expect that, but youd be wrong. Oliver Scharf. But then Hanoi Janes album, Year of Panic, is able to inspire all kinds of misconceptions. Name of the band aside, would you expect a German guy whos a bit handy with an eight-track to produce a series of beautifully lo-fi, sub two-minute, surf-pop tracks, full of buzzing guitar and bubblegum spirit.
But thats just what Scharf has done. The sound is distinctly garage, reminiscent of a 70s surf sound, and like The 5. Tracks like opener, The Boys Are Out and Beach Kids are unashamedly infectious, utilising catchy hooks, hand claps and the odd Ooo ooo ooo to great effect. The production is fuzzy, but that only adds to the overall charm of the album. Because charming is what it is, as Hanoi Janes have packed Year of Panic with some real gems. Summer of Panic offers something tinted with psychedelic sounds; Our Lives could have been an early track by The Strokes had they been influenced by the Californian sun rather than the New York shadows; Good Bone is a track which can only be performed if there are several oversized surf-boards nearby.
Year of Panic is lo-fi, scuzzy garage surf-pop at its finest and it deserves to be the sound-track of your summer" -Bowlegs. This is the good stuff-dropouts, tape hiss, bad attitude and catchy songs. Packaged in an oversized envelope a la Mayfair Set with one of three Polaroid reproductions affixed to the front. Deluxe packaging at an economy price. After playing their first show at Upset The Rhythms Yes Way last year theyve run riot in in sweaty rooms up [and sometimes down] the UK matching laid-back vocal harmonies with wicked shouts. Now theyre moving on from their savage days with a melodic set of fuzzy jams that are a must hear in The trio describe the record as a "..
Side A opens with the dancefloor friendly "Lonsome XOXO", "a song about a girl obsessed with death" while "Plants" contains a cosmic disco bassline and use of string guitar, showing their influences fall outside the narrow margins of electronic music. Side B gets darker and heavier with the apocalyptic sci fi synth punk opener "Opto 5. Fresh from their releases on Paper Bag and Mexican Summer and blog buzz, these manaics yet again deliever the goods.
Two tracks, black and white sleeve. More, more sad hits. Reference intentional. Slightly oversized envelope sleeve. Spooky 4ADish pop charmers. Beautiful full-color sleeve. Initially a 4 piece comprising Paul Rixon on guitar and vocal, Bill on guitar, Stuart on bass, Mark Flunder from the Television Personalaties on stand up drums. Bill later left to form The Big Paintings but the rest of the band continued as a three piece releasing records on Pauls own Bi-Joopiter label.
If you dont consider the 80s cassette culture a true DiY form of post-punk folk art, you really need to investigate the Bi-Joopiter discography. Comprising of painstakingly hand colored, bagged, stamped and xeroxed artwork, it truly does lift the medium of cassette-as-art that has carried on into todays aesthetic nether-regions of the resurged cassette culture movement. It is with that in mind that we at Captured Tracks, with the aid of Paul Rixon himself, have done our best to try to create as close a fascimile as possible to those first two McTells cassette reissues on Bi-Joopiter. Like if Robert Smith gave birth to a baby, and the baby was actually a cassette of Cure demos that had a lot more staying power than actual Cure demos.
Ostensibly we could say this song is reactionary: abandoning the good vibes and surf jams of the warm months of 09 in favor of something colder. Rigid bass lines over icy, high-register synth whine. But the song has a lot more heart than that, so long summer time repeated endlessly until it not only makes sense, but makes frigid cold seem welcoming.
Having grown up in the Far East, Newell returned to his home of England at age 13 with just a little 3-inch spool tape-recorder and his first guitar. At age 14 he wrote his first song, not even knowing any chords. His song writing continued through is teens and into his 20s, when he purchased a Sony reel-to-reel recorder and 12 string guitar. It is this early songwriting that led him working with a wide variety of musicians, recording in beautiful studios and forming his many projects such as Cleaners from Venus and Brotherhood of Lizards.
But it was this early songwriting and recording that led him to find that he was happiest when recording by himself, with minimal equipment. As Newell often says, "Actually, I preferred the demos. The tracks on this collection run from to mid Some are recordings loosely based on movie themes and soundtracks for imaginary films. Some are instrumentals from a collection called The Late District, while others are from a recent album Return to Bohemia, which saw a small release in England. This recent resurgence in creative strength, along with the success and newfound popularity of Cleaners from Venus, have all led up to Teatime Assortment.
Think of it as a "Best of New Newell. Originally released in , it has all the hooks and melodies of Cleaners from Venus and Brotherhood of Lizards and then some. With Partridges immaculate production, its something rather more again. They dont make albums like this anymore Were ecstatic to bring this album back in print to celebrate its 25th Anniversary! He stands out as a highly influential figure in psychedelic 80s music, despite his relatively small number of releases. Captured Tracks is out to help these fans by reissuing a collection of his songs dubbed Elegant Daze.
More layered and textural than previous Oh Sees releases while keeping all the typical Dwyer punch, oomph and weirdness. Our second LP release, and we couldnt be more pleased with it. Citing the Velvet Underground as their primary influence, Fronted by Adrian Borland, who went on to form the seminal post-punk band The Sound following the demise of the band, The Outsiders gained exposure through opening for acts such as The Jam and The Vibrators. With Close Up, the band matured and further developed into the punk sound that was clearly a gateway to Borlands work with The Sound.
The band were clearly influenced by the Detroit rock sound of The Stooges and were even joined on stage by Iggy Pop himself for their rendition of "Raw Power". Long out of print on vinyl, this reissue provides a great look into not only the development of the legendary Adrian Borland, but also a look into the transitional phase of UK rock from classic to punk. Available on vinyl only in a run of 1, Two tracks, color sleeve and color insert. Their brand of the mids jangly guitar-pop was intellectual, refined and classy as opposed to the shambolic and noisy lo-fi scene heralded by the C compilation they would appear on and be connected with during their active career.
In , the great Cherry Red label finally pulled together the unreleased tracks and singles into the CD Reserved from which this vinyl-only compilation is pulled. Combined with a copy of Disinterest if you can find one this collection is the essential vinyl document of a great band from a great era of music that can easily be thought of as what would be their debut LP. Includes mp3 download card. Recent full-length album released by PPM. Beginning with a raw, punk-informed foundation to their damaged synth-pop leanings, each subsequent release saw the band shedding skin, bounding from reverb-heavy four-track hiss to disjointed murky instrumental sprawl, and most recently upping production to almost club-worthy standards.
Snapper became synonymous for shows as diverse and osculating as their lineup. Snapper EP captures one of the earliest forms in all their space-freak-out glory. Comes with a poster and memo insert! The duo swiftly failed at this and decided instead to play music with a more forgiving set-up. They began playing bass and guitar and got a drum machine; they quickly found that all attempts to reconcile the stark, percussive landscape of Colossal Youth with a Staple Singers group hug yielded something that was distinctly neither, but went with it anyway.
After their first show, Soft Healer became a trio with Sara Berger joining on sax and organ. A few shows later they were an even four with Nick Decarmine playing drums. At this point the band collectively owned all of the first nine Funkadelic albums. Formed in , the band have been playing a ton of shows on the West Coast and garnering new fans with every stop.
Their music is tight, romantic, electronic pop with influences from a variety of dance and post-punk sub-genres. First on White Wax. We surrender as its threatening dragon-like shadow spreads over our positions. The single is a gem and will surely excite fans of Blank Dogs, New Order and moody 80s synth work outs. The Soft Moon pick up the very best elements of those movements and craft a sound thats not unlike anything out there.
Raised under the burning sun of the Mojave desert, Vasquez channels both his punk upbringing and Afro-Cuban heritage to sculpt decidedly dystopian soundscapes for a new generation of torn romantics. Its a record set somewhere in the near post-apocalypse where technology enchants as much as it destroys. Two tracks, one million hooks. Were really proud to be putting this out in anticipation of a Captured Tracks LP.
However through numerous line-up changes, delays in recording and the onslaught of bands such as the Happy Mondays the band never quite hit their mark. Though they had a great live reputation and a strong regional following, Newell, with some misgivings, felt their music was out-of-step with the times. That same year, he turned down the offer of a literature degree course at university as well. Why bother? He had a part-time washing-up job, a guitar and a room in a rambling, boho house. He could just tear the whole thing down and start again. And so he did. Calling themselves The Stray Trolleys, the music here predates Newells work as The Cleaners from Venus and the bulk of the sessions on their sole album, Barricades and Angels, were recorded at Octopus Studios during spring and summer of Amazingly, although they had little to no rehearsals, all backing tracks were recorded fairly quickly and everyone got on well, especially in the pub afterwards.
So, whats the story here? A few youngish unknowns got together in a little home-built country studio and recorded a handful of songs for an album that eventually emerged on a DIY cassette? They werent perfect, but there is something very special about this collection. The music captures a time. Just listen. Three great tracks. Freaky color insert. I mean, never has singing along to a graphical location where peepul choose to end it all seemed quite such top larks. Reissue of this Sarah Records single. With its underlying urgency peppered with a frost of delicate melody, its influence has only really begun to make headways through a myriad of sub-genres within independent, often cited as a key influence on our own label roster.
This will mark the first time any of these recording have been pressed on vinyl domestically in the US and the first time all housed in one package. With an underlying urgency peppered with the frost of delicate melody, the influence of the Wake can be seen in a myriad of sub-genres within the independent community and is often cited as a key influence on our own label roster. These have long been difficult finds for any aspiring record collector, until now. Each contains songs exclusive to the respective release as well as some that have, or may yet become Beets songs.
