follow The come not on a mission of conquest, but one of annihilation. With them is a young legionary named Artorius. For him the war is a personal vendetta; a chance to avenge his brother, who was killed in Teutoburger Wald. In Germania Arminius knows the Romans are coming. He realizes that the only way to fight the legions is through deceit, cunning, and plenty of well-placed brute force. In truth he is leery of Germanicus, knowing that he was trained to be a master of war by the Emperor himself.
Instances of repetitive narrative were also a bit too frequent. I did remain with the Army Guard as a reservist, finishing out my career in , after almost twenty-one years, retiring as a Master Sergeant E I am so pleased with the reviews that came in and appreciated all you did. Thanks for "pumping up my book! As I had no idea how to contact Cornwell for permission to use Sharpe, he remains nameless. I also loathe reading stories that are complete fantasy, yet they use historical persons. I wasn't too upset with the grammar like some of the other reviewers were maybe I had the revised edition that one of them mentioned.
The entire Roman Empire held its collective breath as Germanicus and Arminius faced each other in what would become the most brutal and savage campaign the world had seen in a generation; a campaign that could only end in a holocaust of fire and blood. Mace's understanding of Roman military tactics, artillery, legion training, etc, is brilliant, however, he makes a few mistakes. In the heat of battle, you don't shout "prepare for the passing of the lines," it's too loud! Instead, Centurions would blow a whistle. The whistle can be heard even in a loud environment. Soldiers aren't better lovers than other people, great lovemaking requires more than physical stamina and just ravaging a woman. When it came to the gladiator fight between Vitruvius and a top gladiator, there were many mistakes and assumptions.
All gladiators know how to protect their flanks, the idea that only a legionnaire knows this is ridiculous 2. Only tyros and those condemned to die in the arena would be given rusted swords. Top gladiators were given the best swords because that's how you protect your investment. The strength of a Roman Legionnaire is with his unit. The strength of a gladiator is fighting as an individual. Having Vitruvius defeat a gladiator that had won 30 fights so quickly was unrealistic.
Overall, I like the story, even though Artorius is a little too perfect. I mean, come on, every few pages is Artorius with the perfect body, Artorius with the muscles, Artorius the leader of men, Artrius whose only defect is his desire for revenge. I'm surprised Mace hasn't talk about Artorius and his giant you know what. I'm happy that Vitruvius keeps beating his butt.
Come on, Mace, it's fine for heroes to have flaws. The weak sections of the book are the I'm a little torn about this book. Where it's strong, it's really strong.
