Thursday, 28 June Saturday, 30 June Cendrillon by Nicolo Isouard is a masterpiece by a young Franco-Maltese composer which has unjustly fallen into oblivion. While Napoleon continued his conquests by annexing Catalonia and the Kingdom of Holland, bringing Rome in the French Empire and marrying Marie Louise of Austria and while the British continued to expand their territory by invading the islands of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, Imperial France, stands proudly amidst a Europe in turmoil where in all the great powers believe in their own superiority.
In this atmosphere the French comic opera became both an identifiable and strong culture for the French, who though very fond of Italian opera, retained opera comique as the essential entertainment for the post-revolutionary bourgeois. The chaos of the Revolution now seems faraway and the French can enjoy life and are all happy to laugh and be moved.
Created in at the Salle Feydeau in Paris, Cendrillon by Nicolas Isouard known as Nicolo quickly became famous throughout Europe after a phenomenal Parisian success.
The work was considered one of the best comic operas of the time, written by a young composer from Malta. It seems inconceivable that the opera was to fall into oblivion for more than two centuries. It has thus left its mark in the repertoire of the major opera houses around the world. The name of Isouard was then mentioned only as a sponsor of Etienne's libretto or as an unknown French composer who prepared the ground to welcome Rossini, the operatic genius. It was not until that the Australian conductor Richard Bonynge, a fervent champion of French music, took an interest in Cendrillon which hides musical treasures on every page, and presented it in Moscow with a live recording to enable the public to rediscover a work that deserves a major place in French opera repertoire.
